The Union Cabinet has approved a 2% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) which will take the DA to 55% from 1 January 2025. This move will benefit over 48 lakh central government employees and nearly 66 lakh pensioners, giving them much-needed relief against rising inflation.
August 2025 DA Hike Expectations
Looking ahead, another 4% DA hike is expected in August 2025. Once implemented, effective from 1 July 2025, the DA will rise to 59%. Based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) trends, this could be the last DA hike under the 7th Pay Commission, likely to be notified by September 2025.
Salary Impact for Employees
The DA hike will bring a clear rise in monthly pay. For example:
- An employee with a basic pay of ₹18,000 will get an additional ₹720 per month, taking the gross salary to ₹28,620.
- An employee with a basic pay of ₹50,000 will get an increase of ₹2,000 per month.
Pensioners’ Benefits
Pensioners will also see a good jump in their monthly pensions:
- A pensioner with a basic pension of ₹9,000 will receive an additional ₹360 per month, making the pension ₹14,310 at 59% DA.
- Similarly, those with higher pensions will gain more.
Moreover, arrears for July and August will be released with October 2025 pensions/salaries, giving an extra boost during the festive season.
Arrears Payment Timeline
- The July 2025 DA hike, to be announced in August or September, will include arrears for July and August.
- These arrears will reflect in the October 2025 salary and pension ensuring retrospective benefit to all employees and pensioners.
Transition to 8th Pay Commission
The 8th Pay Commission was announced in January 2025, with the government now finalizing the members and Terms of Reference (ToR). The commission is expected to be implemented by 2027, with a possible fitment factor of 1.8. If this happens, the minimum wage could increase to ₹30,000.
