Bank Holiday : Banking is a part of our daily life. We use banks to withdraw cash, transfer money, deposit cheques, or pay EMIs. But sometimes we visit a bank and find it closed because of a holiday. This can be frustrating, especially if we didn’t check the holiday list.
India is a country with many cultures, languages, and traditions. So, bank holidays are not the same everywhere. A normal working day in one state can be a big festival in another. To help everyone, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) shares an official list of bank holidays every year.
September 2025 will have many festivals in its first week. This means several bank holidays will come one after another. Let’s see the details day by day so you can plan better.
3 September 2025: Bank Holiday in Jharkhand
On 3 September, banks in Jharkhand will stay closed for Karma Puja. It is an important tribal festival in cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad.
Karma Puja is about worshipping the Karam tree. It stands for fertility, prosperity, and unity. If you live in Jharkhand, finish your bank work before this date.
4 September 2025: Bank Holiday in Kerala
On 4 September, banks in Kerala will remain closed for Onam. It is the biggest festival in the state.
Onam is not only religious but also cultural. People enjoy traditional food (Onam Sadya), boat races, and flower carpets (Pookalam). On this day, most businesses and banks in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode will not work.
5 September 2025: Holiday in Many States
On 5 September, many states will have a holiday. It will be one of the biggest bank closures of the month.
This day is for Eid-e-Milad in several states. In Kerala, it is also the main Onam day called Thiruvonam. Banks will be closed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Union Territories like Jammu and Srinagar.
If you need cheque clearance, loan approval, or any in-person banking service, plan before this day.
6 September 2025: Holiday in Sikkim and Chhattisgarh
On 6 September, banks in Sikkim and Chhattisgarh will stay closed for Eid-e-Milad and Indra Jatra.
Indra Jatra is a lively festival in Sikkim with dances, rituals, and community gatherings. Banks in Gangtok, Raipur, and nearby places will not work on this day.

What Banking Services Will Still Work?
Even when banks are closed, many services will continue. Digital banking has made life easy. You can still:
- Withdraw or deposit cash at ATMs.
- Send money using UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm.
- Use net banking or mobile banking for bills and transfers.
- Pay using debit or credit cards.
Only services that need manual work, like cheque clearing or demand drafts, may get delayed.
Why You Should Plan Early
The first week of September 2025 will have almost five continuous days of holidays in some places. This can disturb your plans if you need cash for events, weddings, or important payments.
Always check the RBI holiday list for your state. This helps you finish your work before holidays start and avoid last-minute stress.
Final Thoughts
Bank holidays show the rich culture of India. One state may celebrate Karma Puja, another celebrates Onam, and another Eid-e-Milad. But this also means banks may close on different days in different states.
In September 2025, the first week is packed with holidays. If you depend on physical bank visits, plan ahead. Use digital banking to manage daily tasks like payments, transfers, and recharges.
Being ready will save you time and worry.
