Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced new rules for bank lockers which will apply from 2025. Every locker holder must sign a revised agreement with their bank before 31 December 2025. This ensures clarity on responsibilities, terms, and locker usage. If not updated on time, your locker access may get restricted, so it’s important to complete the process as early as possible.
Enhanced Security Measures
From June 1, 2025, banks are required to strengthen locker safety with:
- Biometric access like fingerprints or iris scans
- Surveillance cameras with 180-day video storage
- Dual-key system (both bank key + customer key required)
These steps reduce the chances of unauthorized access and improve customer security.
Transparent Pricing Structure
Banks will now clearly share details of all locker charges such as:
- Annual rent
- Maintenance charges
- Applicable taxes
The rent depends on locker size and branch location. Customers in metro areas will pay 20% higher rent compared to other areas. This transparency helps customers in financial planning.
Locker Rent Charges (2025)
Locker Size | Urban Annual Rent (₹) | Semi-Urban Annual Rent (₹) | Rural Annual Rent (₹) |
---|---|---|---|
Small (6×6 in) | 1,500 – 3,000 | 1,200 – 2,400 | 900 – 1,800 |
Medium (10×10 in) | 3,000 – 6,000 | 2,400 – 4,800 | 1,800 – 3,600 |
Large (>12×12 in) | 6,000 – 12,000 | 4,800 – 9,600 | 3,600 – 7,200 |
Liability for Losses
If a locker is compromised due to bank negligence, fraud, or theft, banks must compensate the customer.
- Compensation = 100 times the annual rent
- Example: If annual rent is ₹3,000 → Compensation can be up to ₹3,00,000
This ensures accountability and customer protection.
Nomination and Access Rules
From April 16, 2025, customers can nominate up to four members for smooth access after the locker holder’s death.
- Nominees can get access within 15 days after submitting valid documents.
- This helps families avoid long delays.
